28,000 revoked CDLs and the case for a registry of record

An estimated 28,000 non-domiciled CDLs have been revoked, and Congress is now asking for more oversight of who holds the keys to a commercial truck. What looks like a driver-credential fight is actually a much bigger idea: identity in the industry has been scattered across states, forms and paper files, and it breaks exactly at the seams.

The driver file is the weakest infrastructure

A CDL number, an insurance binder, a medical certificate, a background check, a training record — each sits in a different drawer in a different state. When a carrier needs to know if a driver is fit to run a lane today, it has to assemble a file from fragments. Revocations, suspensions and fraud live exactly in those gaps.

A license is only as real as the record that proves it is current.
